weekend wrap-up

This weekend I worked... a lot... on lots of random things. For example, I finally uploaded (most) of me and Pats music onto my new computer, completely organized the iTunes library (so that it is perfect), and got it all on my phone. I had been putting this off for a while because just the thought of going through Zeppelin sounded tedious and horrible. I am not going to lie and will admit that it took most of Saturday evening and almost all day Sunday. I also worked on some design and we cleaned the house.

It was not all work though, I got to go to the gym meet Friday night which is work for Pat, but not for me, and we watched a few movies including Crazy Stupid Love, which I liked a lot. The explanation of The Scarlet Letter is the best part.

the hunger games

I have been curious about The Hunger Games for a while and with the hype about the upcoming movie I thought I would see what the books were all about. I just started the first one today (audiobook) and am already through almost half of it! So, obviously, they are interesting.

A post apocalyptic world that incorporates physically dividing social classes by food rations, grotesque upper class materialism, and a survivor esc. fight to the death competition determined by a lottery system. See, interesting. I am reminded of Huxley's A Brave New World (one of my favorites) in the aspects of "the capital", a short story written in the 20's called The Most Dangerous Game, and surprisingly enough a recent movie called In Time which has class separation by sectors itself.

So far I like what I am hearing.

(P.S. I really hope they don't make the movie(s) too little kid and cheesy, which I think they might since the characters are primarily young).

dress down

Some days you just need to put on a hoodie and your Converse high tops... today is that day. Its cold and I felt like being super cozy, so there. I was also trying to be productive right before my weekend starts in a few minutes but I just dont have it in me right now. Instead I am looking at and listening to the pictured items below... and now blogging as well. Ok, one of those pictures is actually something productive, but I have devoted the least of my hour off work to it. Fail. Designer fail. On that note, off to the OSU gymnastics meet! Happy weekend!

currently i am...

Yay almost Friday!!

I have been super busy this week working on some logo design for a new special order cake shop. I am trying to wrap it up before I have to dive in to a web redesign for my freelance gig, so fingers crossed for a direction they are happy with tomorrow.

I know all I do is post these little work in progress collages, I swear one of these days I will actually post some of my finished designs :) I have some logos and wedding invitations that could use showcasing after all.

As usual here is a sort of preview into what I am doing that does not really tell you anything at all about what I am working on. I know, I am weird, but I like to keep it that way until things come to a close.

midweek inspiration 32

glasses on the mind.

I am on the hunt for the perfect pair of frames! I hate wearing my glasses, so I am looking around to find a new pair that I am more excited about. These ladies look adorable in theirs, that is what I am going for.

[[ (top left) from brook dennis on flickr. (top right) from rockstar diaries. (bottom) from flashes of style. ]]

I got contacts in high school but did not get a pair of glasses until about two years ago and have never gotten completely used to wearing them. So, I am looking for a new pair of frames that I can wear out and feel comfortable. This is not an easy task, but several online shops around the web, such as Warby Parker and Bon Look, make it a bit easier to browse. I wish Bon Look offered an at home try on program like Warby Parker though! I currently have my first five pairs at home (from WP), but am not particularly thrilled with any of them, so I am going to send them back and order a new trial set asap. Fingers crossed this time.

weekend adventures 49

Last weekend was pretty much all about Saturday, which was a long and busy day.

saturday
I had purchased a Living Social event package a while back for a special wine tasting in Carlton, where me and Pat go all the time. It was $35 a person and included a certain amount of tastings to be used in any room, as well as vouchers for snacks at participating storefronts on the tour. The deal was also listed to come with a "swag bag". I had signed up for the 2-5pm slot, so in the morning we got up and started getting ready to go. If Pat had it his way we would have left at like 11 and been there by noon, but I wanted to dye my hair a bit more since I was not happy with my original ombre attempt, so we ended up getting there right around 2 instead, which was totally fine. Along the way we also saw a lot more flood areas and a rainbow that followed us for most of the drive.

[[ rainbows and floods. ]]

Once in Carlton, we went to the first location to pick up our vouchers and bags of goodies which included a stemless wine glass and pretty nice bottle opener (for each of us). I was excited about the wine glass because all of ours have stems and i prefer the stemless anyway. All in all it was a fun experience, although we certainly did not make proper use of our time. We happen to be wine club members at two of the vineyards that have tasting rooms there, so we spent a lot of time in those rooms tasting for free and picking up our shipments, when we should have been using up our vouchers and tasting new wines. At the end of the day we hardly tried any of the food and have a lot of tastings left. Since the event runs two weekends we might go back to take a bit more advantage of the deal, not sure. For us I do not really think it was worth the deal, but it was still fun.

saturday night
After the rooms started to close we headed home to meet Megan and Tony for Tony's birthday. We met up with Rory and took Tone out to dinner to Block 15, of course. I forgot how good their BLT with pesto is, I ate the entire thing! After, we gained a few more people and went bowling for a few hours. Oh man did I suck. I think out of the five games we played, I only got two strikes and one spare. It was terrible, but still lots of fun. Nate had his own ball and some special powder thing for it that ended up being a weapon we threw at each others jeans, I am not sure who started the war, but I can safely say that Megan lost, she was covered. I wish I had gotten a few more pictures at dinner and bowling, but I left my phone at home!! That never happens!!

After all of this madness, we went home for some chocolate birthday cake that Megan made, and gave Tony his presents, which were the most giant Rice Krispy Treat I have ever seen, and a Ninja Turtles Tshirt. Me and Megan also exchanged our Christmas presents! I will do a post about those later. Finally we decided to watch the most random movie ever, Encino Man with Pauly Shore. Oh man it was so bad I loved it! Buuuddddyyyy.

sunday
The four of us had the ultimate lazy day. I took a shower when I woke up but put sweats back on and I am pretty sure the only productive thing I did the entire day was make everyone french toast. We watched a ton of movies, and played a lot of Hanging with Friends. Finally hungry again and needing something, we decided on Jade Garden. I do not each Chinese very much but they seriously have the best pork fried rice. The boys went and picked it up and we ate family style at the table before slipping into a food coma. Good Sunday. Good friends.

floodage update

Sorry for no post Friday, I was working on some logo design and couldn't pull myself away. I will throw up my weekend adventures tomorrow, but since I have them I figured I would post a few more flood themed pictures. The craziness is mostly over now, but last week was a little surreal to say the least, especially when we were literally secluded from Northtown and had to run to 7/11 for some bread and water since there is no grocery store on this side of the bridge. By Friday afternoon most everything had opened up and I made it in to work after taking care of a few flood related complications with our house. Since I work right on the waterfront downtown I thought I would walk along the river after work to snap a few photos of how high it is. I wish I had a comparison for you, but normally there is about a twenty foot drop before the water. And do not let the pictures fool you, that water was moving fast and carrying trees down with it.

[[ pictures along the waterfront in downtown corvallis. the bottom picture is my favorite spot, a little platform over the water, but it was not safe to go down there this time. ]]

(Ok, I promise I will really stop talking about the weather now).

floodage & tonys 27th

Not to talk about weather for this entire week or anything, because that would be super annoying, but... Snow turned in to rain, lots of rain, lots and lots of rain, and melting snow all of which has lead to floooooding! Parts of Corvallis are being evacuated, perhaps a bit extreme, but I have to say I was surprised when I went over the bridge in to Southtown and found out why traffic was moving at a snails pace. The street is turning into a river... Mary's River to be exact. Getting to work tomorrow might be a little tricky.

Update: Roads are closed. We are officially trapped at our house.

Ok, next topic. Today is our old roomate, and one of Pat's best friends Tony's birthday!! Don't worry Tony, you are one of my best friends too. Happy Birthday!! As long as this weather business calms itself down we will be seeing you this weekend for some festivities. (If you don't know why it says tuna can instead of Tony, you never will).

censored

As most people know by now PIPA and SOPA are two bills being considered in Congress. These bills would severely alter the way we are able to utilize the web by censoring entire websites, viewable content, and search results. You would no longer have complete control over what you are allowed to post or look at. Sites like Pinterest, Flickr, Google, Youtube, Facebook, and Vimeo would be severely effected, not to mention any Blogging medium such as Blogger, Tumblr, and Wordpress. I for one want to be able to post, pin, listen, and read freely, therefore, in accordance with todays webstrike I am participating in a content blackout.

For more information about the bills or protest click here, here, or here.

more snow imagery (from my phone)

Well I cannot say it is quite as lovely out today with lots of slushy rain instead of pretty snow, but like I mentioned I have a lot more pictures from yesterday and over the weekend from some little outings in the snow. Walking down to the football field was especially interesting, tons of unspoiled snow on such a giant flat surface was a bit overwhelming visually. Also, check out the sweet frozen spiderweb I saw (near the bottom).

grownups should get snow days too

This morning was gorgeous. Everything looked like it had just been sprinkled with powdered sugar. Sadly, I had to work, but Pat had the day off so he went out after dropping me off and snapped some pictures with my good camera. Check em out! (and don't be surprised if I post a million snow pics I took with my phone tomorrow because I sure do love pictures of snow).

Notice my poor lonely glove sitting on the ground? We did not find it until around noon it blended in too much!

the light

Tomorrow I am going to a service for Dan, my step dads father, who passed away shortly after Christmas. Everyone wants it to be more of a celebration of his life than a wake, but I am still not entirely sure what to expect. I would imagine that regardless emotions will be running high this weekend. I know that some of his friends will be bringing their classic cars over to the house in his honor since Dan was really in to preserving classic cars himself, had quite the collection, and even won several awards.

I was looking for something to go along with this post and found a great quote when I was breezing around on FFFFound. I decided to take the quote and make my own representation of it. I know that everyone is having a tough time right now, and I find this to be extremely relevant, even if it is from a very famous and lovable story. Remember to smile, laugh, and enjoy the moment, no matter how bad things may seem to get, it is what he would want after all. :)

painted sky

Well it took a while, but I am finally caught up on all of my pictures from the holidays! I think I will take a breather for today and keep it super short, but look at this beautiful sunset that was waiting to greet me when I walked out of work!! So gorgeous. It looked just like a painting, deep violet with neon pink fire. Reminds me of a book I had when I was little...

sunriver part II :: nye / sledding

Sunday (January 1, 2012) we drove up Mt. Bachelor to do some sledding. Everyone had fun, but we all came away with some injuries. I got some decent action shots with the help of Pat, but these pictures do not do the hill justice, it was actually a pretty long/steep run with some jumps. I also have a few pictures from New Years Eve (Friday), but since we were keeping it causal, I do not have too many from the night, so I put those second.

sunriver part I :: snow walk

Saturday morning (12/31) we woke up to a beautiful snowy day and decided to go out exploring the area. Though my good camera died halfway through our little hike, I still managed to snap quite a few pictures of the area. The dark pictures are from Friday night when we were playing with Harlow, Rory's pup.
